What is The Expo?

            Since the
mid-19th century the phenomenon of international exhibitions has
become an emerging thought that has lasted through to the late 1930s, however,
it is now in a different form than back then (Demeulenaere-Douyère, 2012). In
the late 18th century in both France, and Britain national
exhibitions were the phenomenon where the shows focused on industrial products;
world exhibitions succeeded these national exhibitions. These national
exhibitions became international as early as 1851 in London; this was its first
occurrence (World Expo 2020 Economic Impacts Silicon Valley – USA, 2011). Then
it became universal in 1855 in Paris, France once the program expanded to
include commerce, and industry as normal but with fine arts, and intellectual presentations
as the new markets, beyond the agricultural industry (Demeulenaere-Douyère,
2012). It was necessary to develop pavilions, galleries, magnificent palaces,
and buildings that are imposing all with the intention to accommodate these
thousands of companies and individuals as exhibitors, and millions of visitors
from around the world, visiting from various countries (Demeulenaere-Douyère,
2012). Often it is a necessity for the host city to be modernized to accommodate
for the World Expo. This can be done by restructuring the transportation system
similar to the Metropolitan in Paris was restructured to accommodate the
visitors, and convey them to the exhibition. As a result, the city’s appearance
was changed due to new developments (Demeulenaere-Douyère, 2012). This happened
in Paris, which has been the host for five different World Expos in the latter
part of the 19th century and additional two more before the Second
World War.  The urban history of Paris is
closely associated with, and influenced by exhibitions (Demeulenaere-Douyère,
2012). Some cities such as Barcelona’s development has been directly linked to
one or more of these exhibitions. Exhibitions primary goal from the onset was
to promote industry, and trade. Through the numerous photographs taken of the
World Exhibition show outstanding accumulations of entanglements with machines
presented in motion and goods (Demeulenaere-Douyère, 2012).

            In
addition, world fairs also have a role in mediating technological innovation as
well as transfers. With exhibitions new products are launched, the places like
the Palace of Industry or Machinery galleries that are prestigious, and
settings that are grandiose where these new products are exhibited, and revealed
in opulent ways for the entire world of visitors to see (Demeulenaere-Douyère,
2012). This gives other exhibitors the chance and observe, and copy these newly
launched products (Demeulenaere-Douyère, 2012). At the same time though
important, exhibitions had other roles these assume. The economy is included in
the era of globalization giving exhibitions another role in intellectual and
artistic and cultural exchanges that occur between continents, and countries
(Demeulenaere-Douyère, 2012). World fairs are strategically placed under the
banner of cosmopolitanism by way of the variedness of the nations that
participate in the fairs, which open the distant horizon to curious visitors
(Demeulenaere-Douyère, 2012).  These
attractive exhibitions influence a large return of visitors who are all drawn
to the attractive and exotic exhibitions. Many saw such exhibitions as “beautiful
“dream machines” contributing to turn the Western gaze to the worlds beyond
Europe” (Demeulenaere-Douyère, 2012, p.5).
