Sarah RoomiMrs. AllisonENG3UO-CMonday, 20th November, 2017GENDER ROLES AND INEQUALITIES The expectations surrounding gender roles are based on stereotypes and behavior of men and women. Gender roles form the basis of sexism. It occurs through the family, education, peer groups and mass media. In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth the topic of gender roles and expectations is depicted throughout the text through different characters and is shown how men and women were supposed to behave back then whereas Lady Macbeth possess an attitude opposite to the women back in the Renaissance period and same characteristics implies to Macbeth. In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, it is portrayed that gender roles have varied from time to time so that the needs and requirements of that time are fulfilled accordingly. Firstly, the element of character develops the topic of gender roles and expectations. It is the principal element showing sexism in Shakespeare’s play Macbeth and is the focal point of the play, enhancing the topic of gender roles. The character of Lady Macbeth portrays how women were supposed to act back then; they were expected to submit themselves to their husbands whereas Lady Macbeth was not one of those. She goes against the society’s expectations of women. She is expected to be more sensible one and should be a light character instead she rips off all the stereotypes. The author quotes “Come, thick night, and pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell, that my keen knife see not the wound it makes, nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark, to cry, “hold, hold”. Lady Macbeth was the one who manipulated Macbeth for doing wrongful things. She is shown as a strong woman and is not like others. She has a sharp mind and wants to be powerful but she knows that she cannot be given the power that is given to a man and cannot be treated the way men were treated back then so she wants Macbeth the way she wanted to be not the way that Macbeth himself wants to be. In a relationship a partner wants the best for their loved ones and she knows by using her sharp mind she can rule over Macbeth and can help him win the kingship he desires. As a woman she is expected to be demure and controlled by her husband but she is not one of those.Lady Macbeth is not sensitive. She is comfortable with the idea of “blood and glory”. She uses her persuasive ideas to lure Macbeth into doing wrongful things. She is also smart and cunning and her ideas are gruesome. She manipulates Macbeth and tries to take control over him.The author quotes “they met me in the day of success; and I have learned by the perfect report, they have more in them than mortal knowledge.”Back then women were expected to be polite, kind-hearted and demure but Lady Macbeth was not one of those. She was emotionally strong and could easily think of killing a person for her own benefit. She is smart and has a sharp mind with wild ideas and knows well how to execute them. She takes control over Macbeth and manipulates her husband to achieve his dreams by approaching negative ways.In conclusion, the element of character shows gender roles and expectations as people have certain mindset about both men and women through which they expect both people to behave and react just as Lady Macbeth was expected to be more polite and demure as women were supposed to be back then. Secondly, the element of location involve manipulation of order of words and more importantly the word choices also helps to support the topic of gender roles and expectations. As the time has passed by women have been given more power and confidence. Back then women were not allowed to make important decisions in the family but now they play a major role in doing that. Women were also expected to submit themselves and all their belongings to their spouses but now women are strong enough to take steps for themselves for their own betterment.”If you want something said, ask a man; If you want something done, ask a woman” – Margaret Thatcher “Women belong in all places where decisions are made. It shouldn’t be that women are exception” – Ruth Bader GinsburgThe point above also lay emphasis on Lady Macbeth’s character. She was also strong and was not in control of anyone. As the time has passed the role of women has certainly changed in the society. They now live in an atmosphere where they have been taught to work for themselves and are prepared to deal with any kind of bad happening in their lives. They are not dependent on their husbands or any male in their lives. Lady Macbeth also possess the same characteristics as the women these days. She was not controlled or boss around by her husband. She knew her worth and had wild ideas by which she was able to rule on her husband.Back then women were not allowed to avail the treasure of education but today most career opportunities are open to women. Women now serve in medicine, business, new reporting and in every male dominant profession. Things have changed a great deal over the past few years and had a huge positive impact on our society.”When girls are educated, their countries become more strong and prosperous.” – Michelle Obama”No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizen.” – Michelle ObamaWomen getting education is a blessing to the modern world as there is a saying “behind every successful man there is a woman” so it is important for women to be educated as now women play an important role in the lives of their spouses, on work and in their personal lives too. QThe role of women is much different today then it was in the past. Today women work outside home much more. Women also have more than they had in the past. The role of something is something that varies significantly across the globe today. However, we can generally say that women’s role have been expanded from what they traditionally were in the past. In conclusion, the element of location lays emphasis on the role of women back then and in the modern time. A comparison is made between how women were treated in the olden days and how women are now progressing and blooming in a male dominant society in the modern times. To conclude, the element of character shows how men and women were supposed to act in a society back them and in modern day society. Women who had sharp minds were not brought into lime light. The element of location shows the modern day era where men and women are treated equally.
