Topic: Banning the development, possession and use of Chemical Weapons
Back in the 20th century the use of the chemical weapons was wide, which resulted in the huge amount of deaths over the years and the use of chemical weapons dated back to April 22, 1915 when the first full scale deployment of deadly chemical warfare agents during world war 1 when the Germans attacked French, Canadian and Algerian troops with the deadly chlorine gas and from that time onwards the Germans started to develop even more deadly chemical weapons during the span of world war 1 and world war 2 which resulted in many deaths over the years.
Germany is the leading country when it comes to developing weapons of mass destruction and not only that they have also accomplished to create many deadly types of chemical weapons which made Germany powerful and the types of weapons they have used are many starting with the first one is the artillery shells containing xylyl bromide tear gas which was used by the Germans on the Russians , the second lethal killing agent which the Germans used was chlorine which is powerful irritant that can inflict damage to eyes, nose, throat and lungs. At high concentrations and prolonged exposure, it can cause death. German troops also used this to defend their fortress against the Russians. Another deadly gas used by the Germans was carbon monoxide where millions of Jews were gassed with it which remains the deadliest use of poison gas in history.
World war 1 was when Germany started the development and deployment of these deadly weapons of destruction but wasn’t until January 13, 1993 when the CWC was signed and on April 29, 1997 CWC was implemented by the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons, basically CWC is a multilateral disarmament and arms control treaty. Its main objective is the worldwide prohibition of chemical weapons and the complete destruction of all existing stockpiles of chemical weapons.
In 1924, the Germans officers debated the use of poison gas versus non-lethal weapons against civilians. The chemical warfare was revolutionized by the Nazis German’s discovery of the chemical warfare nerve agents tabun, and sarin by Gerhard Schrader a chemist. Since then the UN took the first step towards prohibition of chemical weapons in warfare in the 1925 Geneva Protocol because of the horrendous war crimes committed by the Germans with its chemical warfare. Even though the programs of discontinuation of chemical weapons has yet still seen some states continuing the development of chemical weapons and ideal choice for a group of terrorist organization for a mode of attack as the first use of chemical agents by terrorists against a general civilians which took place on June 27, 1994 and continuing the following years in which many deadly attacks took place like the September 11, 2001 attack on the US cities like new York and Washington, and the continues attacks on Syria which recently took place when a chemical bomb was deployed on a one-storey building.
What procedures can be adopted to seek out and discontinue ongoing chemical weapons programs?
Securing loose weapons
Third party interventions
How can the CWCs guidelines be improved to prevent future catastrophes?
Destruction of chemical weapon stockpiles and subsequent steps.
All state parties have agreed to chemically disarm by destroying by destroying any stockpiles of chemical weapons. States parties have also agreed to create a verification regime for certain toxic chemicals and their precursors to ensure that such chemicals are only used for purposes not prohibited.
Reducing opportunities for terrorist groups to obtain chemical weapons should be a priority since they are using these weapons of mass destruction and preventing these terrorist groups from adding any deadly weapons to their arsenal is extremely important counter terrorism success. Over the course of several months US and coalition partners have bombed the suspected terrorist organization’s chemical weapons store houses and production facility.
