Henry Van De Velde studied painting in Antwerp, from 1880-1885, under Charles Verlat and in Paris under Carolus Duran. He used neo-impressionist
styles. He made many popular paintings growing up, such as De Overwinnaar, De Nieuwe Mens, many more. He also had former art education, at the Royal
Academy of Fine Arts. He also had apprenticeship, from Victor Horta and Paul Hankar. His Art movement was Art Nouveau, which took place from 1890-1910.
Some of the characteristics were undulating, asymmetrical line, often taking form of fl ower stalks and buds, vine tendrils, etc. He did have some trouble with the
ceramic industry that impacted his life as well.
When he got a little older, he started studying painting at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1881 to 1884. In 1889, he joined a group of artists known as
Les XX in Brussels and, with the publication of his lecture Deblaiement d’art, emerged as the group’s spokesman. After Vincent van Gogh exhibited some work
on the yearly exhibition of Les XX, Van de Velde became one of the fi rst artists to be infl uenced by the Dutch Painter. During this period, he developed a lasting
friendship with the painter Theo Van Rysselberghe and the sculptor Constantin Meunier. As a young painter, Henry was all about painting. But in 1892 he stopped
painting, and he made a transition to decorative arts and architecture.
A very popular piece of work he did was the Side Chair. He was the designer of the Side Chair, it manufactured in Scheidermantel, Weimar by 1903,
the medium was Oak, upholstery. The Side Chair was clearly classifi ed as furniture. But although a Belgian, Van De Velde founded an Arts and Crafts school in
Weimar, Germany, that was strongly infl uenced by the principles of the English design reformer William Morris. It was called the Bauhaus, and under the directorship
of van de Velde’s successor, Walter Groupius, it became the leading exponent of international modernism in the 1920s. He also made a painting called La
Blanchisseuse, which is also called the Laundress, which is an 1886 painting by Henry Van De Velde. He used oil paint on the canvas. In November 2005, it was
sold for 22 million dollars at an auction. He also made another very popular piece called Stilleven, which is also called Still Life. He painted it in 1886, he used
oil paint on the canvas as he used in The Laundress.
Art Nouveau is an international style of art, architecture and applied art, especially the decorative arts, that was most popular between 1890 and 1910. A
reaction to the academic art of the 19th century, it was inspired by natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of plants and fl owers. Art Nouveau is a
total art style: It embraces a wide range of fi ne and decorative arts, including architecture, painting, graphic art, interior design, jewelry, furniture, textiles, ceramics,
glass art, and metal work. Art Nouveau took its name from the Maison de La’Art Nouveau, an art gallery opened in 1895 by the art dealer, Bing.
1894, he got married to Maria Sethe, a student of Theo Rysselberghe. In 1895, he built his fi rst private residence, Haus Bloemenwerf, in Uccle near
Brussels. In 1896, his designs of 4 room concepts for the gallery, Maison de L’Art Nouveau, which later gave its name to the Art Nouveau movement, met with
rejection and incomprehension. In 1897, the same room concepts were received by the Arts and Crafts Exhibition in Dresden and signifi ed a breakthrough with
the German public. In 1900, he relocated in Berlin, designing primarily residential and commercial buildings. Skipping over to 1905 to 1915, he was teaching in
Weimar, numerous designs for clients in Thuringia and Saxony, but these were only partly realised. During that time he was designing and constructing. But in
1917, he departed to Switzerland, the family was later allowed to leave Germany. He relocated to the Netherlands. By 1927 he was teaching in Brussels and Gent,
he was a professor for architecture. By 1943, the death of his wife, Maria Sethe happened. In 1947, he relocated to Switzerland. By 1957, Henry Van De Velde
died at 94 years of age in Zurich.
