Nursing Informatics, Electronic
Technology and Patient Care Delivery

Nursing Informatics plays a very important role with electronic
technology in nursing practice today. In turn the implementation of these items
helps improve patient care delivery. With nursing informatics and electronic
technology there has been a decrease in healthcare cost along with a reduction
in errors across the medical field such as medication administration, written
orders are easier to read, and a decrease in patient care falling between the

What is Nursing Informatic and why its so important

Nursing informatics is an area of nursing that integrates
nursing, computer and informative sciences to develop and maintain medical
information along with systems to support the practice of nursing along with
improving patient care outcomes. Technology has advanced so much in healthcare
and also in nursing informatics. Some of the things what we have advanced in
are electronic medical records. These electronic medical records consist of a
record of medications, test results, and nursing and progress notes.

Informatics plays a crucial role in developing and improving
health care technology. Communication is the most important aspect of patient
safety. Nursing informatics contribution to developing and improving technology
is making electronic medical records and computerized ordering for providers
aid in reducing medical errors, health care cost, and delays in patient care.
This has helped reduce the risk of hard to read hand written orders and
inaccurate transcriptions which can lead to medication errors or delays in
treatment. (

                    The impact of
emerging technology on nursing

 Technology is
changing the world at a very fast speed and there is no other place this is
more evident than in a healthcare setting. There are so many technologies
emerging that will change the practice of nursing in the next decade to come.
(Huston, C.2013)

According to The Online Journal of Nursing there are seven
emerging technologies that will change the nursing practice. (Hutson, C.2013)
Some of those technologies that will change the practice of nursing are
genetics, electronic health records, computerized physician/provider order
entries, 3D printing and less invasive and more accurate tools for diagnosing
and treating. (Hutson, C.2013)

    Benefits and Challenges for nursing
care and electronic technology.

As with any new implementation to nursing and healthcare
there are always benefits and challenges. Change is always hard, however as the
saying goes change is good. In discussing the changes in technology, the
changes for genetics has benefits as far as health conditions and the many
different therapies used to help treat these conditions have an element
influenced by environmental, lifestyle and many other factors that will impact
the entire nursing profession. Some of the challenges to many nurses currently
in practice know very little about genetics and lack the competence needed to
effectively teach their patients. (Hutson, C.2013). Less invasive diagnostics
and treatments along with more accurate tools benefit patient care by having a
result in lower patient risk along with cost, the challenges that nurses face
are the ongoing competencies regarding their use.

Electronic Healthcare Records also known as EHR, has made a
huge impact in healthcare. Electronic health records give providers access to
critical patient information from several providers around the clock allowing
for better coordinated care. This allows providers to see patient visits to
specialty doctors or other family medicine doctors and what their interventions
and treatments are.  Computerized order
entry is beneficial to providers because it enables the provider to support
clinical decisions and reducing medical errors. One way is by avoiding
illegible hand writing.

One of the challenges to starting electronic health records
is the cost. Getting the computers to basically talk to one another has its ups
and downs. While providers may love the idea of computerized order entry, this
too becomes a challenge by providers altering their practice and the cost to
train staff can be significant. (Hutson, C.2013)

Nursing informatics is needed so much more than just in
technology. “Nursing informatics takes part in nursing science, computer and
information science, and cognitive science to manage, communicate, and expand
data, information, and even knowledge and wisdom of nursing practice. Nurses
that are trained in informatics not only support improved patient outcomes
through their expertise in information process, structures, and technologies,
but they are helping nurses and other care providers to create and record
evidence in their practice” (Kirchner, R.2012).
