Introduction:

Bia?owieski National Park (Polish:
Bia?owieski Park Narodowy) is a Polish national park located in the province of
Podlachia Voivodeship in the east of Poland, close to the borders of Poland and
Belarus. Bia?owieski National Park covers an area of 152.2 square kilometers
(58.8 square miles). The nature reserve of the Belarusian side also covers an
area about 1,771 square kilometers. Due to the lack of equipment and tourists
on the part of Belarus, few foreigners visit forests on the Belarusian side. This
national park is famous for its protection of the best- preserved part of the
Bia?owie?a Forest. Some also call it ”Europe’s last ancient forest”. The former natural reserve of Bia?owieski National Park was
established in 1921 and upgraded to a national park in 1932. ”Bia?owieski National Park is the
only Polish natural property designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site”. Every
year there is approximately 200,000 tourists visit the Polish side of the
forest. The symbol of this national park is a European bison- the biggest
European land mammal. ” At present, Bia?owie?a Forest comprises the largest
free-living population of European bison in the world. There is approximately

Danger:

In the past, Bia?owie?a Forest once again
becomes a royal hunting ground. The tsar began sending European bison as a gift
to all European countries, while other animals such as deer and moose were
imported from all over the empire to breed in the forest. During the First
World War, the forest suffered a huge loss. The Germans

killed at
least 200 bison. After that released a hunter ban. However, German and Soviet
soldiers continued to kill until the site was occupied by Poland. Unfortunately,
the last wild European bison was killed a month earlier. After the war, none of
which were in Poland. In 1929, Polish authorities purchased 4 bison from
several zoos to introduce forest breeding and released them into the forest. In
a short period of ten years, the number increased to 16 bison. However, the
number of some European bison is still declining, not out of endangerment. To protect
these rare animals, they set up a bison Breeding Centre, which is an area of
274 ha. landscape protection. The area comprises three breeding reserves, and
the European bison Public Access Reserve. The responsibilities of the personnel
of European bison Breeding Centre cover the bison’s habitat in all of the
Polish part of the Bia?owie?a Forest.
