“Insanity is knowing that what you’re doing is completely idiotic, but still somehow you just can’t stop it” (“Elizabeth Wurtzel Quotes”) . They know they are doing something dumb, but they can not stop it at all. Insanity is an element that is used in Gothic Literature. Madness is used to show how crazy people can get, and how far someone will go. However insanity is not the only Gothic element used in Gothic Literature that authors use to create their works. “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar A. Poe is an example of Gothic Literature because it includes murder, fear, and a crazy man.Murder is used as anger in ” The Tell-Tale Heart”. Murder is used as rage, seeing that the madman is obsessed with this old man’s eye. He thinks it is an evil eye.”The old man was dead. I removed the bed and examined the corpse. Yes, he was stone, stone dead” (Poe 376). In addition to death, there are more Gothic elements in the story. Authors use fear to show suspense in the story. Terror is shown because the crazy guy keeps sneaking in at night to the old man’s house. “I knew that he had been lying awake ever since the first slight noise, when he had turned in the bed” (Poe 375). Not only is fright an element Poe liked to write about, but he also liked to write about insanity.A popular Gothic element is insanity. The crazy guy is going insane now that he thinks he hears the old man’s heartbeat, but he only hears it. “I foamed – I raved – I swore! I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting, and grated it upon boarch but the noise arose over all and continuously increased.” (Poe 377). Overall, slaughter, mental illness, and terror in “The Tell-Tale Heart” are examples of elements in Gothic Literature.Poe wrote “The Tell-Tale Heart”, and he told a story using Gothic elements that includes mental illness, a homicide of a old man, and terror of a murder. The psychotic men obsesses over an evil eye. Manslaughter is used as protection. Fright is written in the story for a dilema. After the fact, the young crazy guy will be in jail for a long time.
