develop the needed skills for a desired job role as a project manager/producer.

Company Research

North (UK) – Rockstar North is a British
video game development company which has been part of Rockstar games family
since 1999 based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Rockstar North is home to grand theft
auto series and has also worked on ‘Red Dead Redemption’ and ‘Max Payne 3’.
Rockstar North is constantly looking for employees to fill in various job roles
like animators, artist, programmers, game testers and mission scripters. It is
currently offering a game tester job role in Edinburgh which I would be able to
apply for with my current skillset.

assembly (UK) – Creative assembly is now one
of the longest established studios in the world with 26 years of development
world class video games. It is mainly known for the ‘total war’ game series but
they have also developed the well-known ‘alien isolation’. They also developed
one of my favourite childhood games ‘Spartan: Total Warrior’. Creative assembly
now has over 300 employees and is now one of the largest studios in Europe.
They are located in west Sussex which is an ideal place for developers of
different stages in their careers with reasonably affordable accommodation
around the area considering the wage income. Creative assembly also offers
various benefits for working for them for example private health and dental
care, life insurance and contributory pension scheme.

(UK) – REWIND covers a wide range in the
virtual reality industry including virtual reality production, 360 videos,
virtual reality experiences and mixed reality. REWIND is a team of visual
artists, technologies, programmers and production staff. This diverse skill-set
is complimented by a fresh innovative approach to creating content with
immersive technologies in mind. A couple of projects that REWIND has worked on
is the Jaguar I-PACE concept launch, ‘HOME’ vr spacewalk and NIKE football 360
advert. At REWIND they are currently employing ue4 developers, since I
concentrate all my work on the unreal engine 4 and have worked on a couple
various virtual reality projects myself it makes me viable contender for the
job application.

(Germany) – Crytek was founded in 1999 with
the main studio being located in Frankfurt (Germany). Crytek has created
multiple award-winning titles including the original Far Cry, the Crysis
series, Ryse: Son of Rome and the more recent games which are The Climb and
Robinson: The Journey. Cryteks most recent games are for virtual reality, I
have also found a job listing for a QA tester at Crytek which states ‘VR
experience is a plus’ which would allow me to gradually work my way up to a
developer role in the company. Crytek is also offering free onsite German
lessons for their employees and their partners/spouse, they also offer a public
transport ticket for free 24/7 which could be very useful.

(Canada) – Ubisoft is a leading creator,
publisher and distributor of interactive entertainment and services, with a

worldwide network of studios and business offices are committed to delivering
original and memorable gaming experiences across all popular platforms. Ubisoft

like For Honor, Steep and watchdogs. They currently have over 1000 job listings
on their website for various roles for different headquarters around the world.
Ubisoft also offers internships and junior position for applications which is
also a good way to reach your desired job role within time.

Personal SWOT analysis

For a junior developer or a QA tester job
role the companies share very similar requirements. I will mark myself out of
10 for core skills needed for the job applications.

Working well in a team: 8/10

Communication skill: 7/10

Knowledge in game development/production: 8/10

Creativity: 8/10

Problem solving: 9/10

Ability to work under pressure: 7/10

Strengths – One of my strengths
would be my higher academic background and my interest and knowledge of overall
video game production. My experience and ability collaborating with other roles/departments
in video game development is also very strong and due to this my communication
skills have severely strengthened. I have always been a good problem solver and
outside the box thinker which has been very valuable being a game developer. My
OCD organisation skills are also very useful for game development.

Weaknesses – One of my main weaknesses is the lack of knowledge of different
programming languages although I have a fair understanding with visual
scripting. Another major weakness is that I have not yet worked on a title that
has been shipped which also leads to not having professional experience working
for an established game development studio. I will be working to my full
potential to try and eliminate the weaknesses that I have listed.

Opportunities – The current biggest opportunity for me is the virtual reality
industry, it’s still in early phases but is vastly growing and content for it
is in very high demand. Having worked on several virtual reality projects for
the last 2 years I have built up a great knowledge of developing for virtual
reality and have great awareness of the virtual reality industry and what’s to
come. Due to high demand in virtual reality content I am a reasonable contender
for a job role which requires development not only just for games but also
other experiences in the virtual reality industry.

Threats – Since my main weakness is lacking knowledge of programming
languages and not having worked on a shipped title, it could affect my
competence for a certain job role. Another threat that I have to consider when
applying for a job is where the job is located and how will I be able to
commute between there and home, will I have to relocate? Will I be able to
afford living costs in a certain city considering my wage rate as a junior/intern?

Jobs I could do

Design – The game design role is what I have
been concentrating on during my education time for the last three years of
studying. I have developed skills that are needed for this job role which is to
be able to work in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams. I am also able
to communicate my vision to artists, programmers, producers, marketing staff
and others who are involved in the development process. I am able to accept
constructive criticism and feedback on my work. I can represent my ideas both
verbally and on paper and I can be very imaginative and creative. I have good
verbal and written communication skills and have a good visual design skill. I
am at fair visual scripting level. I am aware of the various game platforms and
technologies. I think that my skill set can cover the job role of a game
designer since most of the job requirements are what I have mentioned above.

QA Tester – I would be
able to work as a QA tester since my skillset cover the requirements for the
job role which is to have a good knowledge of how games are put together and
how the different elements of a game contribute to the playing experience. I
have a good knowledge of games titles on the market so that I could evaluate a
game against its competition. I am able to not to only identify and record a
problem but I will always try to work out what is causing it. I have good
communication skills and I can clearly communicate with other members of the
team. I always pay attention to close detail and I am also persistent and patient.
I have a big passion for playing games and I can certainly play them for a long
period. These skills would make me a competent applicant to be a QA tester for
most companies.

Producer – The course I am studying is
computer game enterprise and has covered a lot of skills required for a
producer/project manager in the games industry. A producer/project manager is a
job role that I would eventually like to pursue in the near future and an
assistant producer job role would help me get to it. To be an assistant
producer you need to be able to work well in a team which I can say I do. I
have a good knowledge of project management since I have been a project manager
for my last four projects. I have strong verbal and written skills and I am
willing and able to learn new skills quickly. I possess high levels of
self-motivation and I am confident in dealing with complex situations. I am very
organized and have good management skills and I am able to plan ahead, set
objectives and prioritize. I always pay close attention to detail and have high
standard of work.
